Carpentry services across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk

Eleven carpentry disciplines, all self-delivered by fourteen employed carpenters from a Spalding base. Send drawings for a priced package, or book a free site visit if it is your own home.

How this works

One contractor, ground to roof.

Most carpentry firms in South Lincolnshire are one or two people, which means a developer ends up appointing three or four of them to get a plot from joists to handover. AJB Group is structured the other way round: one appointment, one programme, one set of RAMS, and the same employed carpenters from the first joist hanger to the last architrave.

The list below is the whole trade offering. Each service has its own page with the specifications, the sequencing and the real jobs behind it, and each of those pages links down to the individual work packages inside it. If you are pricing a scheme, start with commercial carpentry and work down. If you are a homeowner, extensions and renovations is usually the right entry point.

AJB Group is CHAS accredited and SMSTS certified, retains an external health and safety consultant, produces RAMS per project and runs in-house 3D renders so a client can see the finished job before a timber is cut. There is a company crane for joist and truss lifts, which removes a hire dependency from the programme, and an in-house supply chain covering brickwork, plumbing, electrics, plastering and decorating when a job needs more than carpentry.

Eleven services, each with its own page.

Cut roof structure with rafters and valleys built by AJB Group carpenters

Roofing carpentry

The biggest part of what AJB Group does and the trade the company is known for. Hand cut roofs, trussed and attic-trussed roofs, raised ties, mansards, dormers, valleys, purlins, glulam ridges, flat and warm roofs, fascias and soffits. Range runs from a squinting block double garage cut by hand over two rainy days to twelve separate roof adaptations across the Bourne Town Hall renovation for Probus Construction, and a six-storey mansard with three built-in dormers and a perimeter parapet in Tottenham.

Commercial carpentry

The contractor-facing silo: first fix, second fix, full carpentry packages, shopfitting and fit-out, and shuttering and formwork. This is the side of the business that takes a tender, prices from drawings and holds a programme. Recent work includes the carpentry tender for a new Tente Castors industrial unit in Peterborough won from Probus Construction, 8 industrial units at Fleet Hargate with 3 more in Spalding, and office fit-outs across eleven of those units.

5 services
Double fire doors with vision panel and keep shut signage in a commercial corridor

Fire doors

FD30 and FD60 supply, survey and installation to current fire safety standards. AJB Group installed 72 internal fire doors and frames across nine apartments at 17-19 High Street in Grantham, carried out a full rip out and upgrade of failed fire doors for North Norfolk District Council, and built a fire safety test centre in Peterborough used to demonstrate materials and door mechanisms to trainee fitters. Certification-led work with a paper trail, not door hanging.

FD30 and FD60
Timber cladding boards being fixed over a ventilated batten cavity

Cladding

Timber, cedar, larch, composite, shiplap, uPVC and cement board, fitted on new build, extension and commercial elevations. Reference jobs include over 350 square metres of Scottish larch on the Norfolk coastline at Cromer, British red cedar wrapped around the drive-thru section of a Costa at Hemsworth to the brand's 2022 design, and cement board cladding on domestic extensions in Long Sutton.

Structural carpentry

Everything that carries load: floor joists and structural floors, posi-joist and traditional hand cut sets, timber frame erection, stud partitions and structural openings. Specifications AJB Group works to routinely include C24 8x2 at 400mm centres with 22mm Caberdex flooring, and the team has completed a 288 square metre joist set in two days on a 6,000 square foot house for SSL Home Creations.

2 services
Completed kitchen with two islands fitted by AJB Group joiners

Kitchens

Supply and fit or fit only, domestic and contract. Over 100 cabinet colours to choose from, with a six-step process from quote and agreement through order, production, installation and sign off. AJB Group has fitted nine kitchens in one building at Grantham as part of a commercial to residential conversion, and single high-end domestic kitchens with Belfast sinks, quartz tops and family-sized islands.

Staircases and balustrades

Straight flights, winders and double winder staircases, softwood and oak, with timber or glass balustrades. Two double winder staircases were built into the Grantham apartment conversion, a solid oak balustrade set was ripped out, supplied and refitted on a domestic property in Long Sutton, and an oak staircase with glass balustrades was fitted on a high-specification home at Thorney.

Doors and windows

Internal door hanging at volume, external doors, timber sash windows, shop front glazing frames and full uPVC rip and refit. AJB Group installed new external sash windows and doors plus a new shop front at Grantham, craned in a full timber window frontage with a half moon head on the same job, and carried out a complete rip and fit of uPVC windows and doors on a bungalow in Long Sutton.

Extensions and renovations

Turnkey work for homeowners, managed from demolition to the final brush of paint using in-house trades. A recent Long Sutton project ran from full strip back and demolition to footings, rebuild in matching brickwork, a 2m x 2m extension, a raised tie trussed roof with new plastics, bi-fold doors with a submarine gable window and full decoration, with a return visit for flooring and a kitchen revamp.

Garden carpentry and external timber structure by AJB Group

Garden carpentry

External timber structures, garden rooms and outbuildings, decking, fencing, gates, pergolas and cladded canopies. Work in this category includes a hot tub shed in Long Sutton with five doors hung and the double sets converted into bifolds to open the frontage up, plus hand cut hip end softwood porches with cladded undersides across a housing site at Quadring.

Outdoor timber

For main contractors, developers and QSs

Priced from drawings, held to programme.

Send the architectural drawings, the joist and truss design and the specification, and you get a package price rather than a day rate and a shrug. Scope is written out line by line so there is no argument later about who owns the stud partitions, the fire doors or the kitchens: at Grantham the package was new external sash windows and doors, new shop front windows and hoarding, 72 internal fire doors and frames, two double winder staircases, new internal joists and flooring, stud partitions to all external walls, stud layout for nine apartments, nine kitchens and a pharmacy shop fit-out, with phase one on site for six weeks.

Capacity is the second question and it is usually the one that decides the award. Fourteen employed carpenters plus vetted gangs means plots run in parallel, not in sequence. On the Quadring bungalow development the team roofed seven plots in a single day at peak, and on a 300-home development the internal carpentry package and garage roof installations run across plots at different build stages at the same time.

For homeowners

One number, one contractor.

If it is your own house, you do not want a package price and a programme, you want to know who is turning up and what it will cost. AJB Group gives you one point of contact, a free site visit, a written estimate before anyone lifts a tool, and the option of in-house trades for the brickwork, plumbing, electrics, plastering and decorating so you are not chasing five different numbers.

The same carpenters who cut roofs on a 300-home development do the domestic work, which is the entire reason the finish holds up. In-house 3D renders mean you can see the kitchen, the media wall or the extension before it is built rather than after.

Common questions

Before you call

Which carpentry services do you actually self-deliver?

All of them. Roof structures, joists and structural floors, timber frame, first fix, second fix, fire doors, cladding, shopfitting, shuttering, staircases, kitchens, doors and windows and garden carpentry are carried out by fourteen employed carpenters plus a vetted supply chain, not sublet to a third party.

Can you price a full carpentry package from drawings?

Yes. Send the architectural drawings, the joist and truss design and the specification, and we will price the package. Recent packages priced this way include 17-19 High Street in Grantham for Probus Construction, 8 industrial units at Fleet Hargate with 3 more in Spalding, and the full internal carpentry package on a 300-home development.

How many plots or units can you run at once?

Enough to hold a programme rather than trickle through it. On the Quadring bungalow development the team roofed 7 plots in a single day at peak, and on the 300-home development internal carpentry and garage roofs run across plots at different build stages at the same time. That is a function of employing carpenters rather than hiring them job by job.

Do you work for homeowners as well as contractors?

Yes. Roughly half our work is domestic: extensions, renovations, kitchens, staircases and garden carpentry. Homeowners get one point of contact, a written estimate before work starts, and access to our in-house trades for brickwork, plumbing, electrics, plastering and decorating.

What accreditations do you hold?

We are CHAS accredited and SMSTS certified, with a retained external health and safety consultant. RAMS are issued per project. That is the paperwork most main contractors ask for at pre-qualification stage, and it is set out in full on the accreditations page.

Which areas do you cover?

Day to day we cover South Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and West Norfolk from Spalding. Larger contracts have taken us to Kent, London, Northampton, Nottingham, Leeds and Wales, so distance is a programme question rather than a hard limit. Ask about your site.
